Austin is the state capital of Texas, an inland city bordering the Hill Country region. Home to the University of Texas flagship campus, Austin is known for its eclectic live-music scene centered around country, blues and rock. In recent years, some Austinites have adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird",&nbsp;which refers to the desire to protect small, unique, and local businesses from being overrun by large corporations.&nbsp;Since the late 19th century, Austin has also been known as the "City of the Violet Crown", because of the colorful glow of light across the hills just after sunset.
In 1987, Austin originated and remains the site for&nbsp;South by Southwest&nbsp;(stylized as SXSW and colloquially referred to as&nbsp;South By), an annual conglomeration of parallel&nbsp;film,&nbsp;interactive media, and&nbsp;music festivals&nbsp;and&nbsp;conferences that take place in mid-March. Emerging from a strong economic focus on government and education, since the 1990s, Austin has become a center for technology and business. A number of&nbsp;Fortune 500&nbsp;companies have headquarters or regional offices in Austin, including&nbsp;3M,&nbsp;Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Austin

With a rich sense of history and a thriving entertainment scene, Downtown is Austin’s beating heart. Late-19th-century architectural landmarks, including the iconic Texas State Capitol (1888) and the Driskill Hotel (1886), mix with modern museums. Music lovers flock to celebrated venues like Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater and Stubbs BBQ, while revelers hit the high-energy bars along East 6th Street.

Downtown Austin

Evolving East Austin is a diverse area. Early 1900s bungalows give way to modern condos, while cool cocktail bars mingle with Southern-style eateries, including iconic Franklin Barbecue. In a circa-1841 building, the French Legation Museum documents the Republic of Texas era. Other museums examine the city&rsquo;s musical history and African-American experience. East Cesar Chavez draws hipsters for drinks, art and bands.&nbsp;

East Austin

Travis Heights is a sought-after residential neighborhood close to the bustling South Congress scene. Rolling, winding streets shrouded in mature live oak trees showcase an eclectic array of 1920s-era homes with gardens plus a few modernist constructions. Locals hit the wooded trail of the Blunn Creek Greenbelt, which connects a pair of neighborhood parks, the Big Stacy, with a spring-fed pool, and the Little Stacy.

West Lake Hills is a city in Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,063 at the 2010 census. The city developed rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s on the south side of the Colorado River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.7 square miles.As of the&nbsp;census[1]&nbsp;of 2000, there were 3,116 people, 1,143 households, and 873 families residing in the city. The&nbsp;population density&nbsp;was 835.7 people per square mile (322.5/km2). There were 1,185 housing units at an average density of 317.8 per square mile (122.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.60%&nbsp;White, 0.29%&nbsp;African American, 0.29%&nbsp;Native American, 1.28%&nbsp;Asian, 0.71% from&nbsp;other races, and 1.83% from two or more races.&nbsp;Hispanic&nbsp;or&nbsp;Latino&nbsp;of any race were 3.85% of the population.There were 1,143 households out of which 40.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.0% were&nbsp;married couples&nbsp;living together, 5.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 17.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.10.In the city, the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 35.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.The median income for a household in the city of Westlake Hills was $116,905, and the median income for a family was $232,913. Males had a median income of $116,371 versus $43,969 for females. The&nbsp;per capita income&nbsp;for the city was $55,651. About 0.6% of families and 2.0% of the population were below the&nbsp;poverty line, including 1.8% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over. In June 2010, the average home price was $1,225,697.

Westlake Hills

Bouldin Creek is bordered by&nbsp;South Congress&nbsp;to the east, the&nbsp;Union Pacific&nbsp;railroad track to the west,&nbsp;Barton Springs&nbsp;to the north, and West Oltorf to the south. It includes two major commercial areas, South First and South Congress. Given its proximity to these areas, and to&nbsp;downtown Austin, the neighborhood has changed dramatically as result of&nbsp;gentrification.
The neighborhood has several local historical sites including the Victorian mansion&nbsp;Green Pastures, which once belonged to Austinite&nbsp;John Henry Faulk, and the St. Anne&nbsp;African Methodist Episcopal Church&nbsp;(originally constructed in 1916) on Newton Street. In the South First area, the Mexican bakeries, tattoo parlors, art galleries, and unusual shops reflect the changing ethnic and social identity of the neighborhood. Another integral part of the neighborhood is the&nbsp;Texas School for the Deaf. The campus occupies the entire area bounded by South Congress, Elizabeth Street, Barton Springs Road, and South First. Originally created in the mid-19th century, the school underwent a massive renovation and expansion during the early 1990s.

Bouldin

Zilker is a lively area with lots of dining and entertainment options. Restaurants range from chef-driven hot spots to laid-back local fixtures to food trailers. There are popular venues for theater, film, live music and local art, as well as a number of relaxed bars, many with patios. Situated next to its namesake park with 350 acres of Green spaces, Zilker also provides access to jogging and biking trails.

Bordering Lady Bird Lake, the Barton Hills area is a top destination for outdoor recreation. 350-acre Zilker Park features a spring-fed pool called Barton Springs, plus botanical gardens, a sculpture garden and athletic fields. It also plays host to the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival. The Barton Creek Greenbelt offers miles of rugged hiking and biking trails as well as seasonal swimming holes.

According to data from the&nbsp;U.S. Census Bureau, the population of the area defined as Barton Hills was 7,993 in 2009, across an area of 3.199 square miles. The population density per square miles is 2,499, just below the citywide average of 2,610 people per square mile. The racial breakdown is 80% white, 12% Hispanic/Latino, 4% Asian/Pacific Island, 2% black and 2% other. Median household income in 2009 was $51,930, slightly above the median household income for the city at large. The average estimated value of detached houses in 2009 was $395,682, notably higher than the citywide average of $286,025.
